At the moment, these possibilities probably seem scary as well as completely unrealistic. But fashion has always presented a transformed view of society; not just a way of people dressing or looking, but clothes and ideas that suggest, affect and alter behaviour. In fact it’s not such a great leap to a future as described above. Technology has already gone on a warp-speed that has made the lives of a generation unrecognizable to the one before. And to add to the confusion, a ‘nostalgia’ for the past, as seen in fashion’s recent ‘retro-onics’, remains the other shaping force within today’s culture. Yet the longer we linger in the melancholy of yesterday's songs, singing other people's lines, playing parts that are no longer relevant - the more we will be at the mercy of the often corrupting influences of our stagnant ‘popular culture’. In her incredible essay ‘Waking Up In The Middle Of Some American Dream’ writer and activist June Jordan says that we “must change and challenge the old order of things into which we are born or we must forfeit our value as new and innocent life in the world.” I think it’s definitely time for us to wrestle back the very idea of life from those who seek to profit most from its distortion. But how do we do this – when so much is changing, and so quickly?
