The ‘Active Contact Lens’ will scan a high-resolution image onto our retinas, altering anything in the ‘real’ world that does not comply with our aesthetic standards. We ourselves could then affect how each individual sees us by imposing a unique ‘face’ onto each watcher's system, so that we are seen each time in a particular way, and able to appear ‘differently’ to different people who might be physically present in the same space and time. The design possibilities will be endless and the future of fashion will, presumably, continue to be about ‘surface', but ‘crafted’ in a completely new way. The ‘multiplicity’ of appearance may mean that we will have to ‘clothe’ our ‘digital appearances’ as well as our physical one – which could result in some of us taking even longer getting ready to go out. With technology’s assistance, people may increasingly design their own clothes. And future designers may have to prove whether they or any of their ‘products’ are relevant to tomorrow’s consumer needs. |
