Fred and I have been working as a creative team for 8 years, 6 of them as a couple. We were working at a design company doing commercial shoots, and we started to do fashion/art creative projects on the side. I think we both enjoyed the planning, the actual shoots, and the deliberation over which images worked and which ones didn't, the collaborative aspects of creating and learning new skills together.

I do the hair and make-up, create or find wardrobe, props, and usually coordinate the model(s). Fred creates the lighting set, constructs backdrops, and of course does the actual photography and editing.

The creative impulse can originate with either of us, we both scout locations, and we usually both art direct when the shoot is in progress. We've developed a bit of shorthand, so we're able to weave in and out of each other, stepping in and backing off as necessary. It sounds like it could be hard or exclusive on the people around us, but quite the contrary, most people say they love our vibe and want to come back for future shoots.

We have been bringing other people in on the more complex projects, and we've had some fun collaborations, but we often end up with just the two of us and a model because it's often more time-consuming to work around many schedules and keep numerous people up to speed on a project. It's just so convenient to plan and execute a shoot when we are the only ones involved. And we can do it over coffee or while we go for a bike ride.
