For my work process, I begin with drawings. Usually very small, detailed drawings in my sketchbook. This then leads to larger sketches and possibly some test shots. Then I spend a lot of time developing and planning for the shoot day. This involves building and designing sets, or finding locations, choosing who I want to shoot, planning lighting, designing compositions. I like to have a hands-on involvement in every aspect; often building sets myself.

I prefer to keep the number of people on the shoot to an absolute minimum; this way there is less distraction and I'm able to have a more intimate one-to-one engagement with the sitter. Occasionally I'll have one assistant. Then after the shoot, which is often very quick - a day or two - I begin the retouching, which I do myself. This for me is a very important stage and I will often spend many weeks reworking and rebuilding images in post production.
