Subterraneous, gsp. 20x24" I make artist's statements for each body of work generally and then more specifically for each show. An artist's statement introduces a portal for viewing the work in a particular environment or circumstance, but it shouldn't wax philosophical or technical unless the most basic explanation of a work requires that kind of writing. It should provide a kind of abstract of the work and nothing more. The artist has already spoken by making the work. It's really time, after that moment, to be silent and let people have a conversation with the work. I would hope that's what interests viewers--the work rather than the artist. I always have this advice for photographers: protect your work from the market until nothing can turn you away from your path.
