Cemetary

Another issue I started to explore in spring 2007 was the transition from childhood to adolescence to adulthood.

Although the maturing process is usually gradual and sprinkled with certain rites of passage, my memory of it feels much more abrupt, almost as if life came and snatched away my twenties. Of course, the onset of HIV / AIDS in the early and mid-1980s is hardwired into my perspective and heavily influences my memory, feelings and every photograph I take.

Over the years, I have made a number of self-portraits imitating death, often in Provincetown. Cemetery is one that I created for this series. The death images are comforting as a meditation on my own mortality.
