I make a
living at photography but as far as advice... It's a brave new world
for those looking to make a living as a photographer today. It's about
an 80/20 split between business responsibilities and making pictures,
respectively. With that in mind, shoot only the things you enjoy, not
what you think will get you work - you'll drive yourself crazy trying
to please everyone! Shoot as often as you can afford. Get a website and
post only the best images, not necessarily your favorite images. Edit
with a critical eye and get opinions from someone other than your
mother. I've been fortunate to have shot campaigns for Smirnoff Vodka, Chase Bank, Target, Nike Bauer, Only Vegas, Three Olives Vodka, Jet Blue and Waterpik among others. It's important to have goals and motivation for the future. As we all know, motion is becoming a growing responsibility for many still photographers. Motion itself is also trying to find it's place in the digital age. I'd like to incorporate more moving imagery into my portfolio, whether it's traditional video or some still/motion hybrid remains to be seen. |
