But tonality is only one part of a good image. “The model,” says Chadwick, “is without question the most important part of my work.” For that reason he spends 15-20 minutes with the models before every shoot, “trying to get to know a part of their personality we can draw off of,” he says. He works with a lot of the agencies’ new faces – girls who are just off the plane and new to the city, perhaps intimidated still by the industry. Often, they don’t speak much English, and he admits a big part of getting good images is being able to communicate well by hand signals while still making a meaningful connection. He says what makes a good photographer is realizing “it’s very personal to the girl, and is more of a union.” “It’s natural for me to meet a new girls and work with them,” he says, and when done right, “you can get something good without a lot of experience.” |
