One way Ivy ensures her photographers are in a good position to get work is by encouraging them to update their portfolios very, very often. “For a rep, it’s important that the [photographer’s] port is constantly changing,” she says, “so you always have something new to show.” The more photographers’ books change, the more reasons Ivy has to go back to the client to show off their work, and “the more likely it is they’ll be remembered when the time comes … or that we’ll be there at the right time.” And when the work comes, Ivy is on hand for every shoot she books in the city, which account for roughly 50 percent of her photographers’ jobs (the other half are location shoots). While there, her duty is to “make the client feel secure and keep them out of the photographer’s hair”. She admits that representing artists is more about the artists’ creative needs than about her commercial ones. “It’s about the growth of the individual rather than money because the more the artist grows, the more the rep grows,” she says.
