Someone once told me that the images I style were almost like fairytales. That really struck me as a truism, so I would guess that's where I lean, stylistically. My aesthetic tends towards beauty, but incorporates little details that can be at odds with the strictly beautiful. I'm happiest when the images hint at an underlying story, an alternate time and place or a "magic realism". But not quite so far from reality as to be truly alien. Maybe a "through the looking-glass" style?

I have over 15 years of graphic design and art direction background, first conceptualizing imagery for ads, annual reports, etc. with sketches, then making the image happen, whether by traditional illustration or by coordinating photography. Some of the most creative collaborations Fred and I have had were on corporate projects. I don't know if I love fashion or ad campaign image-making more... for me they both have to tell a "story", or have a little twist to them to be truly satisfying projects.

I always knew I'd be in an artistic career (I said I'd be an artist when I was four, apparently, and I was never without sketchbooks and charcoals by the time I was 8), so styling photographic images is really just painting in a different medium. Maybe more like a collage. I also went to college for stage theatre, which I think gives me a soft spot for a "scene" and the propping, setting and costuming necessary to create artificial realities.

What I didn't train for was hair and make-up, that's something I've been learning as I go along, but Fred says it's more like I am painting a face than making it up anyway. Same art, different medium. And hair, well, it's really sculpture, isn't it?
