What's the most challenging part of making your designs? Usually when you tell people that you have a clothing line, or you do knitwear, they assume it is all creative work and fun. The creative and designing part of it is such a tiny part of the whole process. Each piece is designed but then the patterns have to be made, the pieces knit, pressed, sewn together and then labelled. It can be physically exhausting, especially when I knit the pieces on a knitting machine. It is not a machine where you put in the pattern, press a button and the piece knits itself, like most people think. You have to go back and forth to knit every row manually and that can get really tiring if you have a lot of pieces to make at once. I am sure it is very fun and relaxing if you have a sweater to make and do so within a two-week period while sitting and watching a movie. As a business that is not how it works. That is what makes it a difference between a business and a hobby. It makes a huge difference when you have people around you that remind you that you are doing ok, no matter how hard it gets or how tired you are. I have a great support system around me, my parents, boyfriend and friends push me to keep going and motivate me. If it weren’t for them, I would not be as far as I am now, and it gets better every season. If you decide to have a career in any creative field whether it is fashion, photography, or visual art, it is a struggle at the beginning. If you love it, you keep going and keep at it because it really is what you are meant to do, and it gets better. |
