Most of my editorials were born from an idea, a concept, a theme. This time, however, it was the beauty, the old fashioned charm and the elegance of the model inspired me. She brought to mind a famous poem written by Lord Byron in 1814 (two centuries ago!).

In this poem Byron describes a woman of much beauty and elegance. He stirs the imagination and presents a play for the mind in its simplicity and exaltation of sexuality.

This grace is “nameless” in that it is ineffable. It is a common idea to say that there is no way for human word or verse to describe it, so it must remain nameless even as the speaker perceives it clearly. And if prose cannot come close to a description of this abstract beauty, what could Byron have said about photography...?
