I have a fellowship stipend to attend college and study photography. It’s not much, and it barely pays the bills, but it’s one avenue of photographic industry. Joking aside, in serious terms, no, I don’t make money as a photographer right now. I’m right there with the green, struggling commercial or editorial photographer. We share ramen noodle recipes.

I do have advice, though… fail, and fail regularly. Understand why you failed. It’s the best opportunity for transformation and moving forward or expanding when you learn what isn’t working and why it isn’t working. It leads to a space to problem solve and to express new ideas. I also think being well read, well organized, punctual, and business and technology oriented are attributes to focus on if you want to be a photographer working in any capacity.

My seven-year type goals are education based. Once I’ve graduated, I’d like to continue my studies in Women’s studies, specifically queer identity, through to my doctorate, where it would be excellent if I could find an interdisciplinary program to allow for photography and research to blend. This is possibility talk though – right now I am concentrating on graduate work.

In terms of what I’d like to be shooting – I have fantasy shoots like creating a series on 'mobsters in Vegas’ or ‘secret lives of assassins’ – they all involve something that seems highly unattainable.
