The shots in the City Silhouettes series developed from spending time in Tokyo and wanting to make images that explored my feeling of being high up in the city looking down at the vast metropolis below. I tried to be open to that experience, the positive as well as negative aspects around these vast modern mega cities that have developed, especially in Asia in the past 50 years.

The series developed from personal images. I love being in large vibrant cities and at various times have lived in New York, London and Beijing. I always gravitate towards the pull of major cities that are teeming with opportunities, dreams, desires, energy, as well as anxiety and disappointment, but I can't help thinking that human beings are like an out of control virus destroying the balance of our planet...... so I guess the images grew out of those mixed ideas and emotions.

I would pick a city, find the right view point and then use people that I had found locally or complete strangers for the models.
