I have been able to support myself through grant funding, sponsorships, exhibitions and prizes. My tip for those starting out would be don’t give up, in an industry full of setbacks and rejections it is important to persevere. I am returning to Japan in September to direct a documentary on the Alpha Inn ‘Love Hotel’ in Tokyo. This is a continuation of my 2009 exhibition ‘Tokyo Hotel Story’ and it will be a significant new step for my work as an artist. I also hope to return to China in the near future and shoot a series of portraits of a group of women I met working in massage parlors in Beijing.
