Since I'd already been in the working world for 4 years, I wasn't sure if I wanted to forgo an income and spend money on education. I asked some photographers around town about how best to learn both the technical and business aspects of commercial photography. Every single photographer I met told me to start assisting and get paid to learn from different photographers with different specialties. This gave me a well rounded experience and the foundation for the type of photography I enjoyed most.

My very first commercial shoot was a success . . . the second time 'round. There was confusion about the concept and deliverable. Thus, I had to re-shoot the images and scramble to meet their insertion date. Not an ideal first "professional" assignment, but I learned a few valuable lessons. While it's important to be confident in your work, it's equally important to be open to collaboration and maintain an open dialogue with both the agency and client. Never just assume and always ask questions. Questions start conversations and conversations make sure everyone is happy.
