I came to this subject after my goal to keep expanding and building my portfolio. I've always been enamored with San Francisco's downtown area and wanted to shoot there. San Francisco's downtown during the daytime is almost always in shadow because of the direction of the buildings. Also, San Francisco is almost always overcast so it makes for the perfect shooting environment. My goal with the shoot was to make a drab, grey, downtown environment interesting by putting a bright redheaded model in the middle to liven up the blues. These images to me reflect the desires of anyone who's got that job that they don't want, to just hang around outside as much as possible and avoid going back into work. To show that hopefulness that the outdoors has, but the ball and chain that's bringing them back inside - this reflected in the building and body positioning and propping of the model. The subject was inspired by a fellow photographer who wishes he was shooting full time and not trapped in his downtown office job.

I feel that the photograph is the outcome of the relationship between the photographer and the model and the culmination of the work of an entire team of talented people. There is an energy that develops between everyone on the shoot, and that energy is transferred to the model and captured by the photographer.

My advice for young photographers is simple. Smile. Have fun. Be friendly. And everyone will feel your energy. At worst you get to meet great people.
