Fashion photography is a funny field. You don't necessarily have to have bags of ability if you know the right people or even have a strong fan base. But of course it does help being super talented. My advice would be to shoot anything and everything as often as possible. Especially if you can show feeling and emotion in the images you produce. And also never stop networking, you never know who might give you your big break.
