Most
of the pictures in this story are from "IV - Intravenous", an important personal
project I did, where I followed the goings-on in a drug den, a "crack
house", in Toronto. The shots here were chosen to preserve the subjects' anonymity, since they have stopped using drugs and are rebuilding their lives very successfully. Two years without drugs and going strong. They now have a car, two cats, and a business they are growing. It is going very well. But at the time, I did not know that. I thought it would end badly. That is one reason this is such a moving story to me: I was almost sure there would be crime, disease and death. And fortunately, improbably, incredibly, none of that happened. K and B, as I shall call them, helped me with the choice of exhibit photos and exhibit. Although the actual exhibit is very explicit, people are judgmental and the 'net has a long memory, so I chose pictures here that show no recogniseable faces. A benefit of that is that some of these pictures have never been seen before. I hope I have been able to show a world most of us will never know. They show that drug addicts are people, not labels. |
