Now I shoot for myself, which means that there is nobody to tell me what or how I photograph, and the pictures are better because they do not have to sell anything. I like to start taking photographs without a clue as to what I am doing, if I have an idea of the final picture then there is not the slightest point in photographing it as it is already in the mind's eye, but to pass through the medium of the veiwfinder into another world is interesting. I remember once photographing Andy Warhol. I was interested in his tie, and was doing close-ups of this tie that had sausage dogs on it. There were a lot of press there, all saying "look over here Mr. Warhol ", I was a bit lost between the viewfinder and the tie and without realizing, I was 6 inches away from him, which made him laugh. The last emotion he wanted to show, as he was mouthing "assholes, assholes" to all the press. He did a drawing in every book he signed, but I was poor then.... too bad. Just as it is great to see your stuff in a magazine or on a billboard, so it is good to see it in exhibitions; mostly to get what you feel is a good print. |
