A picture can convey a message or an emotion (or both). I'm more into the "emotion" side of things and I truly believe that the viewer should not try to understand why the creator did what he did. Those images are proposed as a self-standing work that only deals with the image and the viewer, regardless of the author's intentions.

In this type of photography pay a lot of attention to your models, talk to them A LOT,  nurse their mood. Don't impose your technical requirements which should be transparent to them so that they can finally bloom like a flower in front of your attentive lens.
