In terms of models, I find that its always important to keep finding new possibilities, shapes and a variety body sizes, inevitably most of them have different characteristics, but there are those who seem to have some distinctive features which create a durability that is inspiring, almost as if  the camera keeps finding angles that you didn’t see in the flesh.

Rapport with Model

I have created an environment in my studio of absolute calm, my space is my temple as they say. Once a model arrives for a session I will surround them with calm and serenity, I like to think of it as a therapeutic way of working. My studio is surrounded by wood, warm colour and warm lights, orange, red and yellow, which is ironic, as all my prints are finally to be printed blue (toned Cyanotype).

Once the model arrives, there is a period of preparation and we discuss ideas and possibilities. Once the shoot commences I tend to suggest, rather than order, and I compliment, rather than criticize, suddenly everything is positive. All my comments are constructive and flattery is a main key. Then the search begins. What’s interesting is that during the session there are moments when the shoot isn’t really working, but I keep the continuity going whatever the feeling as a constant flow is essential until it falls into a zone. Almost as if the photo-shoot, has a beginning, a middle and an end. I slow everything down, even talk slowly, play light music. This is what I would call- “A quiet way of working”.
