I've always had a vivid awareness of my surroundings. When I was five my best friend's older twin sisters were graduating valedictorian of their class. It was a Catholic school and I remember being backstage with my dad and my friend's dad and nuns asking the men if they were photographers. They had these big fancy cameras strapped around their necks and were just hanging back behind the scenes. They told the nuns that they were on assignment for Playboy. It was the funniest moment and a hilarious tableau. Two mischievous dads in seventies plaid and middle-aged nuns with horrified moralizing faces. I probably decided then that I wanted to be a photographer.
