Why Haven't I Shown Him How to Touch Me

Prince Martin used the low light afforded by evening, sunup, and an overcast sky for all the images in this series. After being pressed for a reason behind this choice, she admits that she likes the soft, gentle quality of light at that hour. And the models don’t need to squint. And finally she concedes: “I dislike shadows.” She used a Hasselblad 500 C/M mounted on a tripod and shot on Kodak 400VC, and all works in this series are printed optically 30x30, a format designed to expose detail and requiring more perfection than, say, digital and its attendant wonders of post-processing magic.

However, Prince Martin doesn’t have allegiance to any particular photographic format. Instead, she believes there is an appropriate tool for each application. Medium format and vivid film work well for her current series, however, for weddings Prince Martin uses a D200. And then there’s her older, student-level Pentax K1000 35mm, which she loves for its “gorgeous close-ups”.  The tenderness in her tone when she describes this decidedly less sophisticated camera reveals that she doesn’t need good gear (which is the sign of a real master), and that she values her tools by their own inherent character rather than their market value.
