With these
images I set out to capture the uncertainty of young girls in their
adolescence, that stage in life when teenagers start to see themselves
in the context of society and are questioning their identity. It can be
a very fragile, but also a strangely romantic stage of their lives. I
street cast the girls, they have no training as a model at all. This
means that they behave completely naturally, a bit awkward to start
off, then grow in confidence as the shoot progresses. I place the girls
in somewhat familiar surroundings, but add touches of unrealism to
emphasise the uncertainty of their identities. I use artificial
lighting to supplement daylight, giving the images a surreal effect.
