For those
considering photography as a profession, I'd advise you to
consider the matter very seriously. It’s a tough business out there,
and incredibly competitive, even more so today than when I started.
Starting out, you need to be convinced that you have the talent, the
business sense (keep overheads as low as possible), and the ability to
work hard with the perseverance to keep on going despite the
ups-and-downs. I feel that it is more important to gain practical experience by assisting rather than to do a degree in photography. It is essential to build a portfolio that you believe in. Make sure its content comes from the heart and is the best you can do, then find an agent who is also confident about your abilities. Be inspired by others, but don’t copy. There are trends and it soon becomes noticeable if your portfolio starts to look like everybody else’s. Open your eyes to the world around you, photography is very visual. Keep on shooting, otherwise you won't learn. Don’t be afraid of failure, this will only hold you back. In fact, there is no such thing as failure, just gaining in experience. Fulfill your ideas, otherwise there is no point in having them in the first place. |
