End of a long day, Shanghai, China, 2006

A son of a street vendor is resting by his family's stand. When I saw this boy, my heart sank. He should be studying at school or playing with friends. Instead, he seems exhausted and overwhelmed. The burdens of life have already fallen on his young shoulders. They are heavy, and come too early for him.

Many of my photos are in black and white, because a black and white image lasts forever. It is abstract, retaining the essence of the image and leaving viewers room to exercise their imagination. Color photos can look more real, closer to reality, yet color can sometimes distract from the content of an image. I usually use black and white, unless I feel that color is part of the message and can’t be separated from the meaning of the picture.
