Different lives and loves, Shanghai, China, 2005

Two couples from different generations sit back to back, each in their own separate worlds. They would never understand each other. They embody different lives and loves. The older couple would find it difficult to acknowledge the presence of the young couple physically expressing their feelings on the wall behind them. Their own marriage might have even been arranged for them, a marriage that is more like a life long obligation -- a duty to be fulfilled. And that is exactly what they seem to be doing here.

The world is full of secrets, but too often our eyes tend to overlook them. However with a camera, we see the world through a small viewfinder, which helps us to look more closely at the details. It is in those details that the secrets are hidden. I have found these secrets on the innocent face of a child, the wrinkled hands of an elder, in my grandfather’s contented smile, and inside many pairs of eyes which are full of hope, love, suffering or pain. I have even found secrets in a shadow of myself. These secrets can help me understand myself, as well as others.
