Over the past several years my interests and tastes as a photographer have changed and evolved. Most recently I have been concerned with the cinematic qualities of the medium. Narrative, environment, lighting and the people who occupy these spaces have been the subjects of the majority of my most recent work. Very rarely do I use the camera as a means of capturing a specific event or instant in time. Rather, I prefer to use the camera as a tool with which to build a moment or create a feeling.

I build my photographs from the ground up. I bring together an idea, a location, a composition, a subject and the lighting, all of which are meticulously chosen and I put them together like building blocks. The images are free to evolve and spontaneity occurs once the initial framework and foundation of the image have been laid. The result of such an approach produces photographs that share an atmosphere with cinema and blur the line between reality and fiction.

For me, the actual shooting of the picture is secondary. I get the most satisfaction from planning, experimenting with light and framing. When I am in this state of “building”, I am quite at peace. It’s as if I were 10 years old again banging two pieces of wood together in my backyard.
