Tom McFarlane was Born in Oak Park, Illinois where he never even worked on the the yearbook staff in high school.

He attended Miami University (of Ohio) majoring in Fine Art (Printmaking). Using a  borrowed 35mm camera, he took the only Photography course offered at the University (in 1967), in the Industrial Arts program.

While teaching elementary art (first through sixth grade in Oxford, OH) he became friends with Paul Schult, who was apprentice to the photographer George Hoxie. Hoxie was the original editor of Minicam Magazine (which later became Camera 35) and in Tom's words "That's where I really became hooked and cut my chops."

After a brief return to the Chicago area where he freelanced in design and photography, he moved to Cincinnati, OH to take a position teaching photography at a suburban high school for 2 years (until 1977). When he left that position, he put down his camera for 26 years (except for family snapshots). During that time he started the publishing company he still runs today.
