Getting work at the beginning was very hard, and I nearly packed it all in more than once. Finding work and getting established was a long, hard struggle. Lots of people were advising me that it would be impossible to survive by merely shooting underwater. The situation is different now, as photographers seem to do better if they specialize. With all the stock photography around and digital capture, photographers need to be producing imagery that’s technically more difficult to produce. I guess I fall into this category. When you put things underwater they take on a magical quality. You’re also shooting things not many other people get the chance to, which automatically makes your pictures interesting.

Along with the commercial work, I find that photographic prints are becoming quite trendy. They sell to interior designers who buy pictures to go in these big exquisite houses in Chelsea, or a French chateau. My prints are all limited editions and some of the editions are getting quite short now.

I like to think my work is a compilation of coincidence and a wicked imagination. A wise old underwater photographer recently said to me that the longer you spend underwater the luckier you get.
