returnI’ve always been a big bag lady.

If my closet says anything about me, it’s that I’ve had a long history, perhaps even a love affair with oversized bags. Ever a slave to the trends, I spent the past few years toting around mini clutches and fancy baguettes as the fashion forecast directed; eagerly awaiting the day when I could again carry a handbag that holds more than my lip gloss. As is common in the revolving door that is fashion and style, I didn’t have to wait too long. Imagine my jubilance when the spring shows debuted with big bag chic as an outright head turner along with the bow. Finally, now alongside my shiny-licious lip-gloss and my hand cream, I can pack things that I really need; maybe some wet wipes, perhaps a mini umbrella. Oh the freedom, the possibilities.

The Trend

It lacks the sumptuousness of an under the arm beaded piece.

It doesn’t scream instant “prominence” like a logo etched tote.

And it isn’t exactly demure.

Instead, an oversized bag pronounces serious fashion. Think a much hipper sartorial equivalent of sensible pumps or tortoise shell glasses. Look for them in many shapes and styles, from bowling to doctor’s bags, totes to satchels, go big or go home.

Positives
  • Versatility—it looks great weather you’re wearing a business suit or your favourite jeans and sweater.
  • It’s roomy. You can live out of it, it carries everything you need.
  • The outsize proportion of the purse makes you look smaller.
Negatives
  • The bag's really too bulky to make the transition to evening.
  • It feels more like carrying small luggage than a handbag.
  • It’s hard to be graceful. Watch out for doorways and even people.
How To Carry Yours

One decision you’ll have to make with your oversized bag is how to carry it. I like to place mine on the crook of my elbow and walk around with a swanky bent arm or carry it by the handles which provides more strutting room. I only resort to the provided shoulder straps when I’m tired of hauling it around. However you choose to carry yours, remember that the bag is the accessory and not the other way around.

My Pick

Yves St. Laurent Muse Bag

“This elegant leather beauty is the new Muse bag from Yves St. Laurent. This oversized bag is made of chocolate leather with tonal stitching (note the subtle "Y" shape on the front) and golden hardware including a small lock. It's a similar to a Chloe Paddington bag but with a bit more of a ladylike feel”. (From lusixt.com) Retail $1295.00
I just got this bag as a belated birthday present and it’s to die for: I affectionately call it my Cadillac. It’s my favourite accessory at the moment and I imagine it will be well into the fall. If you’re on a budget don’t stress too much, this trend is available in every price range so you can easily get big bag chic on a budget.
